Okay, first things first.. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Can you believe it is 2010?!?! I cannot. Seems to me that a blink of an eye ago, the world was going to end when the clock turned to 2000. And now its TEN years later. It shocks me how quickly that went by.

Next, lets discuss my blog name. I was sooo over ‘quirky cupcake’. In fact, the sheer name of my blog made me avoid it. I haven’t been into the cupcake game in a very long time. And while I have been keeping up with my Tuesdays with Dorie baking, I never end up posting about them. I should be booted out of my own group. However, since I have not been following the rules, I have not booted anyone else either since February of last year. So, to start a new year, I am changing my blog name. I have chosen the name ‘slush’. Its been my online handle since I became addicted to the internet back in the late 90s. I think it fits my blog, since when I was active with it, it was basically a lot of slush. Fluff about recipes, the Pens, go Pens! and my boys. I’m going to make a conscience effort to bring my blog back to life. I have lots of ideas that got me excited about blogging again. And most of it is total slush.

Tuesdays with Dorie: Pumpkin Biscuits

I never ever have sweet potatoes. Ever. No one in this house eats them. However, we all love pumpkin. I had stocked up on pumpkin due to the ‘shortage’ and decided I would try to make the Sweet Potato Biscuit recipe work with pumpkin. Before I did so, I emailed Dorie. I wanted to get her opinion on whether it would work or not, rather than wasting ingredients. She gave me some very good tips and on I went.

This recipe came together quickly. I tried hard not to over mix it. Threw them in the oven and they came out perfect. I served them almost room temp with a little honey butter on top. HOLY YUM! We all loved them. This recipe is a keeper. But, I think I’ll stick to the pumpkin.

Tuesdays with Dorie: Chocolate-Crunched Caramel Tart

Its a miracle that I got this tart made on time. Ive been really struggling to keep up with TWD. Ive made the last 3, but then never took pictures. *le sigh BUT, I am going to make an effort. I mean it. Im going to really try hard to get them made AND posted!

This tart was easy. I made a new tart dough Ive been wanting to try, that I saw on David Lebovitz’s blog. Recipe found here. It was a very unorthodox way to make dough since you heat butter, water, oil, salt and sugar in the oven for 15 min, then stir in the flour. It was really easy to make. It did crack quite a bit, and I only saved a little amount of dough to patch cracks. I used it anyhow, hoping the caramel wouldnt seap through. Id try the dough again just saving more to patch with, because it came out really flaky. I loved it.

The caramel was easy to make. I followed the directions to a T only deciding not to cook it as long as it stated bc the color was already dark enough. I went with rice krispys instead of nuts so that the kids would try it. I thought they would add the crunch, but they sogged out adding a good chew instead. Jaos and I both liked the addition.

I plain flat screwed this week up. I could blame it on getting ready to get the boys ready to go back to school. I could blame it on trying to keep Colby’s medicine dosages straight on their ever changing schedule. I could blame it on the dog. However, the fact of the matter is, I am an idiot.

I forgot the graham crackers at the store. I subbed Pepperidge Farm Chessmen Cookies, which worked out really, really well. But then in rushing to get this done, I accidentally made the Florida Pie filling. I topped it with meringue and called it a day. The pie tasted fantastic and I would make it again. Its just not the right pie for this week.

Tuesdays with Dorie: Classic Banana Bundt Cake

Back in the saddle… whew its been a long, long time.  Ive actually made a lot of the recipes for TWD over the past 3 months, but I never seem to find the time to post about them.  Its been a rough couple of months here. You may have read on the TWD board that we found out our youngest has epilepsy. Trying to find medications to control his seizures has been extremely trying. Its all trial and error and could be a very long road. Things have settled enough that I can get back to business with TWD. So, here we go.

On to banana cake.

I followed the recipe to the letter. I had the urge to add some chocolate, but resisted and am so glad I did. This cake is perfect, just as written. It doesnt need nuts, or chocolate. I did add the optional icing listed in playing around. Part of me wishes I had not done that so that I could toast the cake for breakfast. Lesson learned for next time. This is a moist cake, keeps well and is darn tasty. Its a winner.

I’m going to miss a few…

I will be absent from TWD this week and mostly likely next. I know, I know, that’s 3 weeks in a row. But, my Grandma Kennedy passed away yesterday. We will be traveling, and if I do any baking at all, it will be my Grandma’s recipes for my family.

I will be back in action in 2 weeks. Till then.. Bake on.

I made this what seems to be a lifetime ago. By iPhoto standards, it tells me January, 27, 2027. I have a feeling little fingers have been playing with Mama’s laptop. Im going to take a stab in the dark and say it was last summer. I very rarely buy berries out of season and these were fresh. I also forgot to write down the specifics about this cake. However, having made almost every single coffee/breakfast cake in the book, I am pretty sure we all loved it. I havent been disappointed by the breakfast type recipes yet. They are always easy and come out perfect.
